Slavery continued to be the biggest issue through the 1850’s and1854 would be no exception. The biggest drama of 1854 was the Kansas Nebraska Act. This act created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska, but repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820. Now settlers in the new territories could decide if they wanted to be a slave state or a free state. Not only did Henry David Thoreau publish his masterpiece Walde, this year, he also gave a fiery abolitionist speech called Slavery in Massachussetts. A tough year for Americans, forcing all in the country to ask, “which side are you on?â€.
This would be a high mintage number for the New Orleans Mint. Over five million half dollars were minted in 1854. The 1854-O Seated Liberty half dollar circulated widely and for many decades. Collectors should have no trouble finding this coin in any circulated grade. Many have survived in this condition. Mint state, however, is actually a different story. It is believed that only a couple hundred mint state half dollars exist today. In the case for most collectors, the coin is plentiful enough to find in lower grades. One should find a problem free example to add to their collection.
This coin is well struck, generally speaking. There are some areas of light striking that are noticeable on for this coin. Typically the first area to wear down on the Seated Liberty half dollar is Liberty’s breast and knee. However, in some cases, this is just caused by wear in the die. This year’s issue does have one peculiarity. On some coins, the date has some raised die finish lines. This gives the area of the coin a three dimensional appearance. If you have any questions regarding the Seated Liberty Half Dollar or varieties, please contact any of our knowledgeable staff at 800-735-1311, and we’ll be happy to assist you!
