The Goddess of Liberty has been used in many cultures to celebrate the concept of liberty and freedom from oppressors, dating back to the Roman Empire and before. The goddess has been used on currency worldwide, especially in the US, and still is a nationwide icon. Normally, the goddess is depicted wearing a draped robe that loosely fits and her hands are usually occupied holding other significant symbols, such as olive branches, arrows, or a torch. For the US, the most prominent depiction stands in New York's harbor, a gift from the French in 1886. The Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mint participated in the production of the Seated Liberty Quarter. The San Francisco Mint was established until 1854 so it joined in later on for the series. The Seated Liberty Dime series is not ideal for novice collectors. Only the experienced collectors seem to be ambitious enough to keep up with the hard searches and high premiums.
The 1874 Seated Liberty Dime is in very fine condition, with wear that compromises the coin's main details. With a mintage of 2.9 million, the 1874 Seated Liberty Dime can be accessed in most grades for a low premium. While the 1874 Seated Liberty Dime was being minted, other important events were occurring in the US. New York annexed the Bronx, the first public zoo opened in Philadelphia, and America's first major kidnapping of four year old, Charley Ross, took place.
