William Howard Taft is the only person to hold both offices of presidency and Chief Justice. Taft was the elected successor of Theodore Roosevelt, earning the spot of 27th president. Taft was born and raised in Cincinnati, with his father being a prominent lawyer and judge. After attending Yale, Taft became a lawyer then a judge when he was still in his twenties. Taft's political career rapidly grew, as he kept being appointed to higher positions of power. Roosevelt appointed Taft to Secretary of State, where he was handpicked to become his successor. Taft's administration focused more on the Far East, rather than European affairs, and became quite controversial with the conservative wing, since Taft supported the Progressive Era.
The Presidential Dollar series is a favorite among collectors, due to its honorable history and stunning golden hue. Comprised of a copper and manganese brass alloy, the Presidential Dollar series follows the footsteps of the Sacagawea Dollar with its unique golden color. Don Everhart, an engraver for the mint, designed William Howard Taft's portrait for the obverse of this dollar. William Howard Taft's years in office are also included on the obverse of the 2013-S dollar. The reverse features the Statue of Liberty, as well as the coin's legal tender value of $1. The San Francisco Mint delicately places its "S" mint-mark on the rim of the dollar, along with the coin's date of mintage.
