The grandfather to president Benjamin Harrison, William Henry Harrison was the 9th president of the United States. Although Harrison was the second president, since Washington, to also serve in the US military, Harrison is mainly remembered for having the shortest term in office. Being the last president born as a British subject, Harrison was also the oldest president for over 140 years, until Ronald Reagan stole the title. Harrison died, due to complications of pneumonia, just 32 days into his presidency. It would be his death that sparked a brief constitutional crisis, since there wasn't a plan of action for when a president passes away and who succeeds his place. Harrison was raised in politics and led a strong career in the House of Representatives and the US Senate.
The Presidential Dollar series memorializes William Henry Harrison, as the 9th president, and features his portrait on the obverse of the 2009-D Presidential Dollar. Since the US Mint honors four presidents each year, Harrison shares the date with John Tyler, James K. Polk, and Zachary Taylor. Don Everhart, a mint-engraver, designed all of the presidents' portraits for this dollar collection. Harrison is on the obverse, along with his date in office. The reverse portrays a Statue of Liberty design, with the coin's monetary denomination. The Presidential Dollar series' metallic composition is unique, wherein instead of a nickel/copper alloy, it is comprised of a copper/manganese brass composition, that produces the lovely golden color. The Denver Mint is the largest coin producer in the world and assists in minting the historical Presidential Dollar series. The Denver Mint delicately places a "D" on the coin's rim, as well as the coin's date of mintage.
