  • Description:

From being a humble attorney, born and raised in Ohio, Rutherford B. Hayes was a surprisingly great president. Hayes left his career as a lawyer to join the Union Army as an officer. Fighting in the Civil War, Hayes was severely injured 5 times, earning himself a reputation of bravery and was promoted to general. After the war, Hayes served in Congress, before being elected into 3 terms as the Governor of Ohio. Hayes' electoral campaign is historically one of the most controversial in history. Although Hayes lost the popular vote, he dominated in the electoral college votes, and promised to end all US military in Southern politics if he became president. Hayes served for one single term, beginning efforts for the civil service reform, and attempting to reconcile the Southern and Northern divide. As the 19th president of the United States, Hayes' presidency is one of the most underrated.

As president with sound values and a deep desire to reform civil rights, Hayes fought for all races of life to enjoy the United States like the white man has been. Since Hayes only began reforms, he doesn't get much credit for the success that came much later after his presidency. Rutherford B. Hayes' portrait is depicted on the obverse of the 2011-D Presidential Dollar, as well as his single term in office. The reverse design is an honorary representation of the Statue of Liberty, which stands proudly in New York City's harbor. The coin's date and place of mintage are inscribed on the rim of the coin. The Denver Mint is over one hundred years old and reigns as the lead producer of coins in the world.
