Although only remembered as the first president to resign from office, Richard Nixon did accomplish some hard to reach goals while in office. Born in California, Nixon had a background of high level education and military experience. Nixon moved to Washington, with his wife, at the start of WWII. He served in the US Navy Reserve, during the war, then was elected into the House of Representatives and the Senate. Nixon ran for president, against Kennedy, and lost. In 1968, he ran again and won the popular vote, making him the 37th president of the US. While in office, Nixon retreated US troops from Vietnam, bringing POWS home, and ended the military draft. Nixon also established strong relationships between China and Russia, giving the US a sense of security. In 1973, the Watergate Scandal took over any positive actions Nixon once took. Accused and guilty of illegal surveillance, burglary and bribery, Nixon resigned as president, only to retire and become an author. Nixon lived another 20 years before passing away, due to a stroke.
Richard Nixon is the first president to kick off the 2016 Presidential Dollars. Also to be released this year are presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan. The mint-engraver, Don Everhart, is responsible for the design of all the presidents thus far and portrays each president from their prime. Nixon's name and years in office are also inscribed on the obverse. The reverse displays the Statue of Liberty and the coin's monetary denomination of $1. The Presidential Dollar series is made up of a copper and manganese brass alloy, causing the coins appear as golden. Although the Presidential Dollar series does not offer collectors much in terms of investment, collectors have enjoyed adding this fun and historical collection to their portfolios.
