  • Description:

James K. Polk served quite an ambitious and satisfying term as president. Succeeding John Tyler, Polk became the 10th president of the United States and the only president to have served as House Speaker of the House of Representatives. Considered the last strong president before the Civil War, Polk accomplished every campaign goal while he was in the White House. Besides leading the Mexican-American War, in order to annex Texas, Polk also oversaw the building of the Naval Academy, the Smithsonian, the Washington Monument and the issuance of the first postage stamp. When Polk was running for president, he promised to only serve one term and retire. Polk stayed true to that promise and returned to Tennessee. Timing couldn't have been more perfect since Polk passed away just 3 months after completing his term in office.

The Presidential Dollar series began in 2007 and features four presidents every year. In 2009, James K. Polk shared the presidential dollar with William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Zachary Taylor. The first mint facility in the US, the Philadelphia Mint, helps produce these historical beauties every year and places its "P" mint-mark on the rim of every coin. The Presidential Dollar's metallic composition is comprised of a copper core and a manganese brass finish, resulting in the popular golden color. The reverse displays the prominent Statue of Liberty, with a slight mirror-like finish, and the coin's legal tender value is $1.
