  • Description:

Herbert Hoover is only one of two presidents elected without any electoral or military experience. Raised as a Quaker, Hoover was a professional mining engineer and served as head of the US Food Administration. It would be this position that earned him international attention for his humanitarian relief efforts in war-time Belgium. Hoover also served as US Secretary of Commerce, under Harding and Coolidge, promoting partnerships between government and businesses. When he was elected as president, Hoover easily won the campaign since he was already well-known and well-liked by the people. In his administration, Hoover promoted the Efficiency Movement, encouraging the government and businesses to problem solve to better the environment. Hoover also believed in volunteerism and the individual's role in society. He became the first of two presidents to donate his paychecks to charity, since he earned a small living from his mining business.

A role model in so many ways, Herbert Hoover set the stage for many humanitarian efforts that would take place later on in the century. As the 31st president of the United States, Hoover is mainly remembered for the Great Depression and his inability to relieve the country from the dark time. Designed and engraved by Don Everhart and various other artists, Hoover's portrait is honored on the obverse of the 2014-P Presidential Dollar. Hoover shares the year with Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Hoover's single term is also inscribed on the obverse of the dollar. The reverse reveals a Statue of Liberty design, along with the coin's legal tender value. The Philadelphia Mint is the first mint to be established in the US, and was built by the Founding Fathers. Recently, the Philadelphia Mint has adopted the "P" as their mint-mark and have placed it on the rim of every dollar they have minted. The stunning golden hue is the result of a copper/brass metallic alloy, instead of nickel/copper.
