Having one of the most memorable and disappointing presidencies in history, Franklin Pierce was voted as the 14th president. With much experience in politics, Pierce was a Democrat who sided with the South when it came to slavery issues. Strongly against the abolitionist movement to end slavery, Pierce claimed that the movement was dividing the country instead of unifying it. Throughout his term, he lost much support from the Union and his fellow Democrats, mainly for signing the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which nullified other bills that helped the country see eye to eye. Behind the curtains, Pierce's personal life also struggled. After seeing all of their children die, Pierce's wife had to fight illness and depression for most of her life. Once Pierce's term ended, he would be abandoned by the Democratic party for vocalizing his criticism against Abraham Lincoln.
First minted in 2007, the Presidential Dollar series honors all of the past US presidents and features four presidents a year. Going in chronological order, the first president featured in 2007 was George Washington. In 2010, Franklin Pierce shares the date of mintage with James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, and Andrew Johnson. Pierce's portrait is on the obverse of the 2010-D Presidential Dollar, as well as his term in office. The reverse features the Statue of Liberty, which stands proudly in New York's harbor. What catches observers' eyes, with the Presidential Dollars, is the unique metal composition, resulting in its beautiful golden color. Instead of the nickel/copper alloy, that saved the government thousands of dollars in the 1960's, the Presidential Dollars are made from a copper/brass alloy, that give the dollars that lustrous golden hue.
