The Morgan silver dollar reigned as the dollar from 1878-1904. During that time, the Morgan was minted at 4 different mints; each mint branding the coin with its own mint-mark. One of the main producers of the Morgan was the New Orleans Mint, also known as the Old Mint. The Old Mint depended on the success of the Morgan's production so much that when the Morgan's production stopped, the Old Mint was decommissioned shortly after. The New Orleans Mint's building as been used as a fallout shelter, an assay office, and a storage facility for the US Coast Guard. It is now considered a national landmark, representing the history of coins. Your 1889-O Morgan was minted in New Orleans and features the "O" mint-mark on the reverse of the coin.
