Philadelphia housed the first US Mint in history, since it was the nation's capital at the time. The Coinage Act of 1792 announced the creation of the Philadelphia Mint, due to the Founding Father's desire to establish a means of international commerce. The Mint Act was passed shortly after, giving guidelines to the currency about to be produced. The Mint Act instituted a decimal system based on a dollar unit, the coins had to specify its metallic composition and fineness. It was also required that each US currency coin should present "an impression emblematic of liberty." Your 1889 Morgan was minted in Philadelphia, one of two mints left that originally minted the Morgans, and is considered to be in very fine condition. Very fine condition is a slightly circulated condition, with extreme amounts of wear on the surface of the coin.
