Philadelphia housed the first US Mint in history, since it was the nation's capital at the time. The Coinage Act of 1792 announced the creation of the Philadelphia Mint, due to the Founding Father's desire to establish a means of international commerce. The Mint Act was passed shortly after, giving guidelines to the currency about to be produced.
