Even though it hasn't officially been a mint for over one hundred years, the New Orleans Mint still remains an important part to Morgan silver dollar collectors. The Old Mint, served as a branch of the US Mint from 1838-1861, then again from 1879-1909. While the Morgan silver dollar was in production, the New Orleans Mint was able to stay in business since it relied heavily on the Morgan silver dollar production. Unfortunately, the Morgan's production ceased in 1904 and the New Orleans Mint was decommissioned shortly after. Since then, this landmark has served as a storage facility to our Coast guard, an assay office, and a fallout shelter. Your 1885-O Morgan is considered to be in good-very good condition, including a heavily worn and smoothed down surface but the date is still intact.
