Many, who are new to the coin collecting world, do not realize how old some of the US Mints are. Even the San Francisco Mint was established before the Morgans were even thought of. The San Francisco Mint was not new to minting coins, when it took up the responsibility of the Morgan. In just the first year of business, it turned out $4 million dollars of gold into coins, beginning a very successful and lucrative business. It quickly outgrew its first building and moved to the Granite Lady building, where it withheld its structure during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The building wasn't actually made of granite, just the basement was but the name was used for marketing and stuck. Your 1978-S Morgan Silver Dollar was minted at the San Francisco sector of the US Mint, sporting the "S" mint-mark on the reverse, and is considered to be in good-very good condition. It is well-known that the San Francisco Mint has the reputation of producing the best quality Morgans among all of the US Mints.
