It's easy to forget most US currency was named after its engraver. This is the case with George T. Morgan, was the English engraver who designed the famous Morgan silver dollar design. He was hired as the assistant engraver to the chief engraver, William Barber, at the US Mint. Morgan worked at the mint for almost 40 years before earning the position of chief engraver when Barber died. Since the Morgan contains 90% silver, the government had to reach into their silver reserves and reauthorize the minting of the Morgans for completion. Because of the lack of silver, the Morgan's production had to stop in 1904. Your 1887 silver Morgan was minted in Philadelphia and is in fine condition, exhibiting heavy wear on Lady Liberty and the eagle's feathers.
