  • Description:

The New Orleans Mint has been officially deemed one of the oldest historic landmarks in the US but hasn't been a mint for over one hundred years. The New Orleans Mint, also known as the Old Mint, served as a branch of the US Mint from 1838-1861, then again from 1879-1909. While the Morgan silver dollar was in production, the New Orleans Mint was able to stay in business since it relied heavily on the Morgan silver dollar production. Unfortunately, the Morgan's production ceased in 1904 and the New Orleans Mint was decommissioned shortly after. Since then, this landmark has served as a storage facility to our Coast guard, an assay office, and a fallout shelter. Your 1885-O Morgan is considered to be in fine condition, with heavy wear on Lady Liberty and the eagle on the reverse. The mint mark "O" is underneath the eagle, on the reverse, to represent the Old Mint.
