The Morgan Silver dollar began its production in 1878, following the reign of the Seated Liberty dollar. The Morgan consists of 90% silver and due to the silver content, minting these coins became tricky. The US Mint would purchase its silver from individual silver miners, who would receive direct profit for their findings, but that made it difficult for the government to exactly how much silver is coming in and how much should be going out. Due to stricter laws about mining and minting the silver dollars, the US Mint ran out of silver for the Morgans in 1904. In 1921, there were silver reserves that were used to continue the production of the Morgan and to introduce the Peace dollar. Your 1889-O Morgan was minted in New Orleans and features the "O" mint-mark on the reverse of the coin. This coin is specifically considered almost uncirculated and is shipped in a protective coin flip.
