The Somali cat origins begin in Australia, New Zealand, and North America. This breed is a fairly new breed, being established in the 1940's by a British breeder, who imported kittens from Australia, New Zealand, and North America. From there, the kittens were bought for pet shows in Britain and North America. The Somali Cats were accepted as a breed in North America in the 1970's, in Europe in the 1980's, and in the 1990's, the Somali cats were accepted internationally. The color of their fur can vary between several types of colors. Usually, they are short-haired with some exceptions for long-haired.
The Pobjoy Mint chose the Somali Kittens to be displayed on the 2001 Isle of Man Gold Cat coin. The Isle of Man is an island located between Great Britain and Ireland. It is known to be a self-governing island, with the help of Britain. It is also known to be the originating place of the Manx cat, hence the cat-themed series. Every year since 1988, the Pobjoy Mint produces 24 karat, 1 oz gold coins that features a different cat every year on the reverse side of the coin. The obverse, of these gold coins, portray a thoughtful Queen Elizabeth II, facing sideways. Written around her are the words, "Isle of Man", and the coin's mintage date of, "2001". The reverse side of the coin surprises us with Somail Kittens, adorably playing with a piece of dangling string. There is a lone cat wandering in the background with a few seagulls, flying overhead. With each year offering a new and fresh design for collectors, the Isle of Man Gold Cat series needs to be in your repertoire. Whether you are looking to buy gold online or talk with a friendly salesperson, Golden Eagle Coins is here to help you start your collection!
