  • Description:

The Pobjoy Mint started the Isle of Man Gold Cat series in 1989. The Pobjoy Mint is a private sector mint located in Surrey, England and mainly deals in non-circulating commemoratives, medals, and tokens. This mint has produced coins for many countries and they even feature some of the world's most popular coin collections, such as the Isle of Man Cat series. Every year, the Pobjoy Mint produces one coin with an image of different types of cats for the reverse side of the coin starting with the Manx. Each coin is .9999 fine gold, in brilliant uncirculated condition, and come in a plastic coin flip for protection.

In 1989, the Pobjoy Mint used the Persian cat as the design on the reverse of the coin. The Persian is categorized by its long hair, short nose, and round, flat face. The Persian is the most popular pedigree of cats bred in the United States, although most people are not sure of their origin. Due to their clean habits, friendliness with humans, and affection towards their owners, the Persian is preferred over most cat breeds for apartment living. The obverse of this gold coin features the monarch, Queen Elizabeth II and the words, "Isle of Man". The year the coin was minted, 1989, is also featured on the reverse. On the obverse of the coin displays the cat of choice for that year: the Persian cat. The cat is looking intently outwards and is standing on all fours. The cat's whiskers are defined, making the cat look life-like. There is another cat in the far distance and some seagulls are flying overhead. The coin's weight, 1 oz, is also present on the reverse.
