The Chinchilla cat was chosen to be the breed featured on the 2009 Isle of Man Silver Cat coin. The Chinchilla cat is also known as the Persian, whose physical characteristics include longhair, short muzzle, and its round face. The Chinchilla's origins are difficult to pinpoint but it is assumed that their ancestors were a part of the importation of cats from places such as Turkey, Afghanistan, China, and Russia into Europe. The Chinchilla cat, that is pictured on the 2009 Isle of Man Silver Cat coin, is accompanied by a Chinchilla kitten. Both cats exhibit the familiar long, fluffy hair with short muzzles, and elegant tails. The coin is struck in a proof finish while the cats are finished with a detailed frosted patina. The coin's weight and denomination are both inscribed below the snuggling felines. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is commemorated on the obverse side of the coin. Her famous side portrait is made real with lifelike lines and facial wrinkles to reveal what she actually looks like. This brilliant portrait was first designed by a famous sculptor, Ian Rank-Broadley, to celebrate the Queen's maturity rather than hide it. The Queen is accompanied by "Isle of Man," and the coin's date of mintage impressively inscribed around her portrait.
Inspired by the Manx cat, who is indigenous to the Isle of Man, the Pobjoy Mint decided to begin a bullion coin series to include many cat breeds from all over the world. This simple idea has led to one of the most creative and popular bullion coin series for both silver and gold. Apart from the impressive craftsmanship and attention to detail, the Isle of Man Silver Cat coin series also offers some of the lowest mintages in the silver coin industry. Only 10,000 Chinchilla Cat coins were minted in 2009, grabbing the attention of not only coin collectors but silver investors as well! Whether you are looking to buy silver online for a collection or as a gift, the Isle of Man Silver Cat series is the ideal collection for any need!
