President Roosevelt’s successor, President William Taft, ironically built a naval base at Pearl Harbor to protect the United States from Japanese aggression. As the United States built up its presence on one island, the United States governor of Cuba finally left the island nation. In another part of Central America, President Taft continued Roosevelt’s imperialist tendencies. The United States ousted Nicaragua’s Liberal dictator for a more US friendly leader. This would also be the final year of the Indian Head cent.
This issue was the lowest mintage in the entire series. The 1909-S Indian Head cent only has a mintage of 309,000. Due to the low mintage, even non-collectors pulled these coins from circulation. The San Francisco issue of the cent actually has one curiosity from 1909. The feather tips are very weak from this issue. In fact, 1909-S Indian Head cents with full feather tips should be checked for an added mint mark. Also, the planchets are a little different than their Philadelphia Mint counterpart, San Francisco planchets have a straw golden color. This date is more difficult to find in lower grades, as many collectors pulled them from circulation.
There are no proof issues of the 1909-S Indian Head cent and, curiously, no varieties either. This issue has many counterfeits. Most counterfeits will be a Philadelphia 1909 Indian Head cent with an added mint mark. As mentioned earlier, these counterfeits can be easily spotted by looking for strong feathers. Another way to significantly decrease your chances of being duped is purchasing your 1909-S at The Golden Eagle.
