  • Description:

1888 was a year many Americans were riveted by murders in London’s Whitechapel district. Jack the Ripper’s mysterious murders and crimes gripped the nation. Onto a more savory nature, the Washington Monument was finally completed by the laying of a pyramidion capstone at the apex of the monument. America continued to innovate its way to greatness as the first electric trolley to be successful in a major city was in use in Richmond, Virginia. The Kodak Camera box was invented bringing photography to even amateurs. National Geographic was first published in 1888. As the reader knows, this went on to become an American Institution. Finally, Benjamin Harrison was voted in a president of the United States.

Mintage production of the 1888 Indian Head cent stayed relatively consistent as roughly 37,000,000 were issued. This issue was also well circulated until finally being taken out of the market. Most collectors at the time did not have an incentive to save this date. Therefore, most examples today are well worn. This year specifically has an average strike, so although the coin is rather ubiquitous in low grades, one should take his or her time finding a stronger strike.

Over 4,500 proof issues were made this year, which is quite a high mintage. However, this date is rather hard to find a full red proof. This year does have a very famous and very expensive variety: the 1888/7. It is believed that less than thirty of this variety exist. The next most popular variety this year is the 1888/888. It is another overdate, and as with the former overdate, a loop is required to see the minor bumps on the digits.
