The first clad Eisenhower was minted in 1971, although the idea of the Eisenhower was created a few years prior. When President Eisenhower died, in 1969, it was a no brainer that the next US dollar would portray the late president's face. The Eisenhower dollar has had a very slow take off but it is a favorite collection among younger collectors. In 1965, the price of silver increased, causing the US Mint to create a different alloy for its coins. Using a copper-nickel alloy, the US Mint starting producing coins that are referred to as clad.
