When the new dollar was first created, the US Mint had to choose which ones were made out of silver and which ones would be made from the copper-nickel alloy. The only silver Eisenhower dollars contain 40% and are from the San Francisco Mint. Highly revered for its consistently high quality control and sharp luster on its coins, the San Francisco Mint has been a part of the US Mint since 1852. Marking their coins with the famous "S" mint-mark, collectors are privy to the flawless coins that are produced out of the west-coast based mint. The 1974-S Eisenhower dollar is 40% silver and is in brilliant uncirculated condition. Due to its silver content, it may experience tarnishing if not properly stored.
