The double eagle has quite an interesting history from the California gold rushes. When the US became wealthy overnight, everyone was preferring gold coins over paper money since paper wasn't trusted. But there were very large transactions taking place, causing traders and prospectors to carry hundreds of $10 coins around. When the double eagle was proposed to Congress, it took about 20 years for Congress to approve of the new denomination. Nicknamed the double eagle, the $20 Liberty's legal face value was double what the original eagle's was. The $20 Saint-Gaudens double eagle is in extra fine condition, exhibiting a healthy amount of wear and a lack of luster. All of the ungraded double eagles are sold for gold content, not for specific dates. Rare dates are sold separately at much higher premiums.
