The mintage for the 1946-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar contains a much lower mintage than others minted in that same year. The Certified Walking Liberty Half Dollar 1946-D MS66 NGC is considered a highly numismatic coin, due to its lower mintage and its impressively high grade of MS66. NGC has secured this coin's difficult grade by preserving it in an airtight holder, labeled with the coveted grade. At the time, the Denver Mint was considered the new mint and was able to participate in the entire Walking Liberty Half Dollar series.
The Walking Liberty has inspired many designs through the years and more recently, the American Silver Eagle. The Walking Liberty Half Dollar featured the first design, in half dollar history, to depict Liberty's full body. On the preceding half dollars, Liberty's facial portrait was constantly being reinvented but nobody dared to adapt her body onto a coin. Adolph A. Weinman was the sculptor behind the stunning Liberty design and was assigned the task of changing the dime's design as well. Both of Weinman's designs have gone down in history as some of the most successful designs and are still widely collected among serious collectors nationwide. The Walking Liberty's obverse features the grecian Goddess, draped in a flowing robe, with one arm reaching out in invitation and the other holding a bundle of olive branches. The reverse portrays a tall and brave eagle, perched on a branch.
