The Mint Director, Robert W. Woolley, learned that a coin design could only be changed every 25 years, it was time to change the Barber design on the dimes, quarters, and half dollars. Like other directors in the past, Woolley reached out to local artists and held a competition for the new design. Sculptor, Adolph A. Weinman, was chosen to not only change the half dollar design but also the dime design as well. These two designs changed Weinman's career and are still considered extremely successful 100 years later. Weinman's depiction of Liberty is still used today, on the American Silver Eagle bullion coin.
The Certified Walking Liberty Half Dollar 1917 MS63 NGC has achieved an appealingly high grade, by NGC. Since BU Walking Liberty Half Dollars can receive a grade ranging from MS60-MS70, and with MS67-70 being almost non-existent for the series, MS63 is considered highly valuable. NGC preserves all of its coins in official NGC certified holder, that are also airtight sealed to prevent oxidation. The Certified Walking Liberty Half Dollar 1917 MS63 NGC was minted by the Philadelphia Mint and was abundantly produced. The Philadelphia Mint was conceived by the Founding Fathers, when the US desired to establish their own means to international commerce. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was the capital of the US, at the time, and became ground zero for all things coin and currency related. In 1792, the Philadelphia Mint opened its doors and hasn't closed them since. Collectors enjoy certified coins more, since their grade is labeled on the actual holder, making the value undeniable. NGC also makes specialized boxes just for NGC certified coins to be stored in.
