The San Francisco Mint is only one of two original mints that is still in production today. The west coast based mint earned its great reputation over the last 150 years and for good reason. Outside of the fact that it produced the best quality Morgans, it is also considered the most successful US Mint to this day. Morgans generally do contain high mintages that have increased in value and have become increasingly difficult to find. Once the Morgan production stopped, the remainder of the coins were either placed into bags and sent to the Philadelphia Mint, only to sit for another 60 years or were melted down for their silver.
