The San Francisco Mint has one of the best reputations and has held that reputation for over a hundred years. The west coast mint was first established in 1854, as a result of the famous gold rushes. This mint is known for not only making the most coins, out of the four mints that produced Morgans, but they are also admired by their quality of coin as well. When comparing a Morgan minted at San Francisco and one minted at New Orleans, there is quite a noticeable difference. The strike is stronger, the designs last longer even when circulated, and the mint-mark is more prominent. Your 1881-S Morgan proudly carries the "S" mint-mark and has earned the ideal grade of MS64 for Morgans. As any collector will tell you, the Morgan contains a wide variety of grades. A BU Morgan can receive a grade between MS60-MS70. Anything about MS65 is incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to find.
