The $20 double eagle became a lifesaver when it was approved by Congress in 1849. For many years, the famous gold rushes experienced the difficulty of large transactions with small denominational money. In fact, the largest gold coin's face value was only $10. The first design was called the Liberty and showcased a portrait of a beautiful woman, representing Lady Liberty. In 1908, the double eagle got a facelift and became the $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin.
