The double eagle got its nickname because it literally is worth double than the $10 eagle. The $20 Liberty coin's popularity took off and stayed the design of the double eagle for over 60 years. The $20 Saint-Gaudens was the new design that took over, in 1908, featuring a more fierce and warrior-like Lady Liberty.
