The Australian Koala Bear has been a very sought after animal in Australia for an extremely long time. There are accounts of koala drawings in caves to date them far back. Until recently, they have been hunted for their soft and pliable fur. Thanks to local conservationists, the koala bear is protected by law and is thriving once again. This bear is known for its ability to climb tall trees for food by using its large, claw-like hands to maintain a sturdy grip. The Perth Mint decided to honor these nationally loved animals by creating a silver bullion coin series. This series produces coins every year since 2007 and offers a different design yearly as well. Apart from a different annual design, the Perth Mint also produces this series in a variety of sizes. The silver Koala series is a perfect gift for the animal lover or world traveler in your family!
The Australian Koala Kilo Silver 2012 depicts a small koala, snugly clutching a tree trunk. Koalas are built to climb trees so they can access leaves higher than the other animals. Trees and leaves are a koala's main food source so it is vital for them to be able to climb and grip trees without falling. This sweet koala pictured looks like it's about to take a well-deserved nap, after a hearty lunch. One can learn so much about the koala in this picture, including its amazingly craft claws, that spread wide for a perfect grip. Encircling this precious koala are the coin's date of mintage, weight, and purity. There is also a "P" carefully written next to the koala; this is the mint mark of the Perth Mint. The obverse design is a simple side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Due to the creative shading on the portrait, the Queen looks more life-like than ever and even has a dimension to her. All of her features are also very detailed, not withholding her maturity in years and her delicate curls. The Queen is accompanied by the coin's place of mintage, and the coin's denomination.
