In 1993, the Royal Australian Mint decided to start a silver bullion series to honor the nation's most beloved creature: the kangaroo. Known for its long, fast legs, the kangaroo can get up to speeds of 60 kilometers per hour when jumping fast. The kangaroo has been an iconic figure for Australia for an incredibly long time so it definitely is fitting that they use the kangaroo on the coins. The Royal Australian Mint only produced 25,535 coins in 2006, intriguing collectors to begin the Kangaroo series while supplies last. These coins are pure silver and come in frosted brilliant uncirculated condition. They are also packaged in sealed tight capsules with their mint issued card.
The obverse design depicts an older but elegant Queen Elizabeth II, regally sitting sideways so that only her lovely profile is seen. The intricate design of her tender curls and graceful aging lines brings this portrait of Her Majesty to life. Ian Rank-Broadley, a sculptor who decided to reveal the true characteristics of the Queen, designed this portrait to honor the maturing Queen. She is accompanied by the words, "Australia," and "2006," to show where and when the coin was minted. The reverse design is quite a spectacle to see! What seems to be another solitary kangaroo, making its trek across the Australian outback, is actually carrying a joey or baby kangaroo in her pouch. While the mother roo has a proof-like quality, the baby has a frosted finish so it sticks out to the observer. The two kangaroos are racing in front of a large Australian sun, with the words "one dollar," and "one ounce fine silver," written on opposite ends of the coin. If you are lucky enough to get your hands on one of these incredibly low-minted coins, do not miss the opportunity! Start your Royal Australian Mint silver Kangaroo collection today!
