Beginning in 1997, the Royal Mint decided to start a silver version of their gold Britannia series. The Royal Mint only issued proof design silver coins for the inaugural year but decided to incorporate the uncirculated bullion coins the following year. Then, in 1998, the first silver Britannia was minted in the series. Each coin is .999 pure silver, in brilliant uncirculated condition, and comes packaged in a coin flip for protection in transit.
In 1998 then followed by the even years, the Royal Mint used a standing Britannia as the reverse design. The Britannia is a female symbol of the Roman Britain island, usually dressed as if she is preparing for battle. -Obverse: In this case, the obverse displays Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who rules the Commonwealth of Nations. Her delicate side profile is intricately drawn, not missing a detail. "Red Fid Def" is written on the obverse as well and is short for "Defender of the Faith." The coin's legal tender, "2 pounds," in also inscribed under the Queen.
-Reverse: The Britannia stands while holding a trident in one hand and an olive branch in the other. She is looking to her side as the wind blows her toga. She looks like a cross between an angel and a warrior, without faltering or shying away. Written perfectly around the rim of the coin are the words, "Britannia 2020," and "one ounce fine silver.
