The 2015-D Homestead (NE) Uncirculated Quarter honors a famous national monument. The Homestead National Monument of America celebrates the Homestead Act of 1862. This act allowed a person to own 160 acres of land for up to 5 years, if the owner improved the land while they settled there. Altogether, the act made over 270 million acres of public land into privately owned land. The Homestead National Monument of America is located in Nebraska and includes some of the first acres owned from the Homestead Act of 1862. Authorized in March of 1936, the Homestead National Monument of America has preserved some of the nation's oldest prairies, that would have been extinct if it didn't become a national historic sight. The main attraction for the Homestead National Monument of America is its large prairies and numerous hiking trails.
