The 2015 Year of the Sheep is the second installment in the Royal Mint's rendition of the Chinese Zodiac Lunar Series. Due to the mixed culture of combining British style to Chinese tradition, the Royal Mint chose Wuon-Gean Ho to create the designs every year. Wuon-Gean Ho is a British-Chinese artist and printmaker who uses her own diverse artistry to bridge the two cultures together. The Royal Mint is the official mint of England, Great Britain, and Northern Ireland, which is historically known as the United Kingdom. The Chinese Zodiac Lunar Series commemorates the Chinese calendar by displaying an animal for the calendar every year that is in line with the 12 animals of the zodiac. Each coin is one ounce of pure silver, is in brilliant uncirculated condition, and for its protection, is delivered in individual plastic flips.
The coin's obverse, the side of the coin that displays a portrait, contains the majestic queen herself, Queen Elizabeth II. Being the Monarch of the United Kingdom, the face of Queen Elizabeth II represents honor and respect so it is an honor for the Royal Mint to picture her on all of their coins. To furthermore honor the Queen, the phrase, "Queen By the Grace of God," is written in Latin as, "Reg Fid Def." To offset the British inspiration, the reverse of the coin provides a look inside the Asian influence of the coin series. Two male rams are facing each other, their sturdy heads bowing down, as if readying for battle. In clear and concise print, Wuon-Gean Ho writes, "Year of the Sheep," at the top of the coin. "1 oz fine silver .999" is inscribed in fine print to make the coin's weight aware. Lastly, the coin's year of mintage is written along the side of the coin. The Royal Mint's Chinese Zodiac coin series is the perfect conversation piece and encourages collectors to embrace the blending of cultures in every aspect of life.
