The 2009 silver Britannia design matches the design to the 1999 Britannia. Britannia is an icon to the British culture as someone who protects them. She has been revered as a goddess since Roman times and is commemorated by being on the reverse side of every Britannia. On the reverse side of the 2009 coin, Britannia is pulled by two strong stallions, fast approaching battle. Though the horses are wild, she still maintains control by holding onto the reigns. Her famous trident is in the other hand as she strides towards the battle. The goddess is protected by a large, bronzed helmet that covers her head, neck, and face. Encircling Britannia are words etched into the coin; the coin's weight, "one ounce fine silver," the coin's name, "Britannia," and the year of mintage, "2009." Queen Elizabeth II is pictured on the obverse of the Britannia. Her portrait delicately celebrates her aging and maturing with slight facial lines and wrinkles. She sits regally with her lovely tendrils holding up a heavy crown. She has been featured on the obverse of many coins, stretching to all of the Commonwealth of Nations over the years. Accompanying her is the Latin phrase, "Red Fid Def," meaning Defender of the Faith, and the coin's legal tender value, "2 pounds."
