Also referred to as a rat, the 2008 mouse is the first installment of the Perth Mint's Australian Lunar Series II. The rat is also the first animal in the Chinese zodiac calendar so it was fitting for it to begin the Lunar Series II. It was minted alongside its Series I counterpart to keep in line with the gold lunar series' years. There are only two differences between the two Series coins. The Series II coins are slightly larger than Series I. Also, Perth Mint decided to change the design and layout of the coin when creating the Australian Lunar Series II. The 1 ounce pure silver coin is brilliantly uncirculated with proof-like qualities. It also comes in a mint-sealed capsule for protection during travel.
Although the mouse is unappealing and feared by many people because of their disgust, people born under the year of the mouse have quite the opposite reputation. Mouse people are known to be very social, to keep good company, and to treat close friends as family. They are loyal, successful in all aspects of their life, and truly hope for the best when it comes to people they love.
The reverse of the coin displays two small mice, nibbling off of the hay-woven floor. There are also two small pumpkins behind the mice. The mice seem proof-like with having a mirrored finish. The statement, "Year of the Mouse" is inscribed on the bottom of the coin, along with the mint-mark "P" and the Chinese symbol for "mouse". Turning the coin over, you will notice a beautiful upgrade of the famous portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Due to the raised engraving and proof-like features, the Queen looks as if she is coming out of the coin. Surrounding the rim of the coin are the words, "Australia", 1 oz .999 silver, 2008, and the coin's denomination of $1.
