Every odd year since 1997, the Royal Mint changes the reverse design of the silver Britannia. Her main stance is standing upright while holding her trident and an olive branch. But to give the Britannia coin collectors a little something to look forward to, they decided to switch it up. On the 2005 Britannia, the goddess is seen sitting for the first time. She is still holding her trident to insinuate she is always cautious as a warrior should be. The helmet she bears is from Corinth, Greece and is quite the contraption. Along with it being made out of bronze, it covers her whole head, some of her face, and even contains a long piece in the back to protect her neck. It looks like Britannia is just resting in a field, with some wild brush featured behind her. The writing on this side of the coin proves the coin's purity, "one ounce fine silver," displays the coin's year of mintage, "2005," and shows the word, "Britannia," underneath the goddess. The obverse design does stay the same yearly and is a wonderful effigy to the Queen of the Commonwealth of Nations. Queen Elizabeth II is shown older and more mature in this portrait than in other ones. She is posed sideways, wearing an elegant crown. She is accompanied by the words, "Red Fid Def," which in Latin means “Defender of the Faith,â€and the coin's legal tender value, "2 pounds."
The silver Britannia series promises every coin to be .999 fine silver, in brilliant uncirculated condition with proof-like finishes, and is packaged in individual coin flips for protection. In 2005, the Royal Mint only produced 100,000 Britannias! This is actually a generous amount compared to the incredibly low mintages from the other years. If you know anything about the Royal Mint, you know they produce incredible coins that reflect a piece of important history. Make the Britannia a piece of your coin history today!
