The 1997 gold ox is the second installment of the Perth Mint's Australian Lunar Series I. The Perth Mint wanted to keep the silver coin years and the gold coin years at the same production rate so that is why the silver series contains 2 coins per year for 6 years, to stay in alignment with the gold series. The Australian Lunar Series I coins have a simpler design, yet showcase a stunning combo of proof-like images along a matte finished brilliant uncirculated coin. This combination makes for a phenomenally designed coin that is perfect for any coin collection. As stated on the actual coin, the 1997 gold ox is .9999 pure gold and is encapsulated by the Perth Mint for its own extra protection. Due to Lunar Series I containing incredibly low mintages, every coin from the series is a challenge to find!
The reverse side of the 1997 ox pictures a large, strong ox with its rock hard muscles protruding from its stance. The ox is finished with a proof-like patina, creating dimension and detail to the otherwise flat presentation. The magnificent combination of proof and matte finishes, makes this coin come to life and shine bright against other bullion coins. Underneath the ox, there is a saying, "Year of the Ox". The famous "P" mint-mark is also inscribed on the coin, along with the Chinese symbol for "ox". The obverse contains the stunning proof-like image of Queen Elizabeth II, a newly designed portrait from the talented Ian Rank-Broadley. This sculptor wanted to highlight the Queen's aging rather than hide it, like many other portraits have done. The obverse is also stamped with the coin's date of "1997," its purity and weight of "1 oz .9999 gold," its denomination of "$100," and the coin's place of mintage, "Australia". Start your Chinese zodiac collection and enjoy each coin's unique and separate qualities.
