The 1996 American Gold Eagle contains 1/10 ounce of gold. With a copper alloy added to make the coin harder, the American Gold Eagle 1/10 ounce weights slightly more than the average 1/10 ounce coin. The reverse features the recognizable eagle, wings spread swooping down to it’s nest to it’s awaiting family. The reverse also designates the coin's monetary denomination and its gold purity content. The obverse pays homage to the $20 Saint-Gaudens double eagle, by featuring the fierce warrior Lady Liberty. The obverse also features the coin's date of mintage, the 50 stars representing the 50 states, and the word "Liberty," as if the iconic image wasn't enough.
Without a doubt, the most popular gold coin sold, the American Gold Eagle Coin series has kept investors and collectors happy since 1986! Being the official gold bullion coin of the United States of America, the American Gold Eagle Coins are conveniently offered in different increments, offering any budget the chance to own these patriotic beauties! Inspired by the famous design by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the American Gold Eagle Coin resembles the $20 Saint-Gaudens double eagle in the most honorable way possible. In the late 1800's and early 1900's, there was a gold coin, with a legal tender value of $10, that was referred to as the $10 eagle. Since the minting of the new American Gold Eagle Coin, collectors and investors have had a difficult time differentiating between the Pre-1933 gold coin and the new one. It has become common understanding that when speaking of the American Gold Eagle Coin, to associate the weight with the coin, since the Pre-1933 gold's denominations are based on the dollar value and not weight.
