The United States began striking gold and silver bullion coins to compete with world bullion coins such as the Canadian Maple Leaf, the South African Krugerrand, and others. In 1986, the American Gold Eagle series was released to the public and as only gotten more popular since. Each coin is guaranteed by the US Mint and Treasury for it's weight and purity. The 1987 American Gold Eagle was minted the second year of the series, when the collection was just getting its feet on the ground.
The purity, of the American Gold Eagle, is 91.67% gold but contains one 1/2 troy ounce of gold. The additional metals in the coins are copper (5%) and silver (3%) creating a purity of 22 karat. This additional metal is added to keep the coin from scratching as gold is actually a softer metal and can scratch easily in it's pure state. The coin actually weighs more than a 1/2 ounce. This 22 kt alloy is traditionally know as crown gold and is an English standard.
