Description:
The 1854 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is part of the Coronet Head (Liberty Head) series, designed by Christian Gobrecht and minted from 1840 to 1907. The obverse features Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with "LIBERTY," surrounded by 13 stars representing the original U.S. colonies. The reverse displays a heraldic bald eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows, with the denomination "2½ D." below. A pinnate leaf is counterstamped on the obverse, but we are unable to determine the issuer of this symbol.
In 1854, the U.S. Mint introduced the $3 Gold Piece, which slightly affected demand for Quarter Eagles. However, these coins remained popular, especially in circulation-heavy areas like the South and West, where gold coinage was more common than paper money.
